I felt like Sheldon, “This is my spot.”įreaky Fact: Okay okay, the reason for the Snake Pit moniker may have something to with the fact that the men outnumber the women probably 10 to 1 here on Kwaj. I felt lost in my own little world and completely content while watching the ever-changing beauty before me. Ever-present and cooling ocean breezes, an icy and effusively sweating drink, a comfortable table and chair. at low tide as dark storm clouds mounted in the west. Like I’ve spent hundreds of weekends here… Today is my two week anniversary of landing on island. But Kwajalein is a place of many spirits.1 Like all Marshallese. KWAJALEIN TIDAL POOLS HOW TO
Kwajalein has been occupied exclusively by the US military since World War 2 when it was taken from. appropriate shoes and gloves, checks the tide tables, informs someone of where and when reefing will occur, recognizes marine creatures that are harmful and knows how to properly touch and handle them or leave them alone. My weekends are spent exploring and enjoying paradise, or making Home Sweet Home a bit more homey. Kwajalein Island is one of 97 that make up Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands, situated 2100 miles from Honolulu, 2000 miles from Australia and 2100 from Japan so about as remote as you can get in the enormous Pacific ocean. Next weekend is “Party-Gras” at the Snake Pit complete with New Orleans music, but I’ll probably pass. The waves are crashingly loud yet melodious here, effectively drowning out the country music playing inside, and the noise of other patrons – mostly Marshallese men grabbing a few cheap American beers before heading back to their home island of Ebeye. You can see some of the rectangular tidal pools from here, and the tide was fairly high on this visit. To date Ive visited 40 countries and lived in 6, and cherished.
I stopped by the other day after work, got me a can of Coke and a cup of ice for a $1, then went out back to sit and contemplate the ocean and rocky shore. Im Natalie, I work in Marketing by day, and plan adventures by night. While I don’t personally partake of, shall we say, adult beverages, the reason for visit and best thing about this place is undeniably the view, and hence the official name. What could possibly be a map makers accidental green spots in the vast pool of blue representing the Pacific Ocean, many have never heard of these tiny islands.
It’s a bar, one of many options – adult and otherwise – open for afternoon and evening entertainment on Kwaj. For reasons best left unexplored, the establishment officially known as The Ocean View Club is affectionately dubbed by islanders as, The Snake Pit.
